Children’s Day and Parent’s Day in Korea

어린이 날 (Eorini nal) Children’s Day, observed in Korea on May 5, is a special holiday in Korea that celebrates its most special member: children! Schools and offices are closed so that kids and parents can spend a fun-filled day together.

Children’s Day originated in the 1920’s to draw attention to the youngest members of Korea and help improve their quality of life. Dr. Bang Jeong-Hwan was an activist who created the word “eorini” to mean children and with Children’s Day, created rights and protection for kids.

어버이날 (Eoboei nal) Parents’ Day is observed in Korea on May 8. There isn’t a separate Mother’s and Father’s Day. It is a day to give thanks to parents for giving birth and raising them and to foster a sense of respect for the elderly.
